Welcome to Uttlesford Ramblers
Uttlesford is an area in Essex named after the ancient Hundred of the same name to the north west of the county. It is centred around the beautiful market towns of Saffron Walden (in 2024 named as the best place to live in), Thaxted and Great Dunmow with the National Trust’s Hatfield Forest in the south. For those looking for history Audley End house, originally constructed in the 1600s, is worth a visit. If you have not visited this part of Essex before it is a wonderful place to walk, with tiny villages with thatched cottages and ancient churches, and is definitely not flat!
We have a varied programme throughout the year with a walk midweek and another one on Saturdays. As well as the local area we often venture into Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk as you will see on our programme of walks. Walks are a variety of length, usually between five and ten miles and often include a pub lunch or sometimes a picnic. Every Monday there is also a regular morning walk of about five miles from Felsted.
The group also have working parties which go out clearing footpaths and perform some maintenance work with the support of Essex Highways. Volunteers are always welcome.
Members receive a monthly newsletter to keep everyone up to date with what is happening in the group.
